Anise is a valuable herb for most types of congestion.  It is an effective treatment for digestive disorders, indigestion, cramps, and bloating. It helps expel excess phlegm and gas.


 

History/Lore

Anise is one of the oldest known plants that were grown for both culinary and medicinal use. It was an important in 2nd century BCE Egypt where it was grown for food and medicine and as an ingredient in liquor. The Native Americans called anise “Tut-te See-hua”, which means, “It expels the wind.”


Habitat

Anise was first cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East, and was brought to Europe for its medicinal value.  It has been cultivated in Egypt for approximately 4,000 years. Anise plants grow best in light, fertile, well-drained soil. The seeds should be planted as soon as the ground warms up in spring.
