Nettle Beer

Nettle Beer

Nettle Beer is another wonderful way to add local herbalism in to your diet (and fermentation!) There are plenty of recipes out there to forage and find. We are providing you with a simple basic practice, but encourage you to test out your own home herbalist whims. Some great additions are lemon balm and lilac. The possibilities are endless!

  • 1 pound fresh nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf or up to 8 ounces dried nettles

  • 1 gallon water

  • 1 ounce fresh ginger (Zingiber officinale) root

  • 2 ounces dried burdock (Arctium lappa) root

  • 2 lemons

  • 4 ounces dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) leaves

  • 1 pound brown sugar

  • 1 ounce cream de tartar

  • Dry Larger Yeast (per package instructions)

  • Bring water to boil, pour over nettles, burdock root, dandelion leaves, and freshly grated ginger, and let steep for 8-12 hours.

  • Strain nettle infusion.

  • Juice lemons and add lemon juice to infusion.

  • Add brown sugar and stir to dissolve.

  • Pour into fermenting vessel and add yeast per package instructions.

  • Let sit for one day, then bottle (and strain again if need be) into flip top bottles. Give it a week or two and test them out!
